Every facultative reinsurance placement brings carriers, brokers and reinsurers into a network where they exchange risk information, negotiate terms, secure approvals and document coverage. AI can make this process faster and more efficient, but only when supported by reliable data, connected systems and clearly defined workflows.

eReinsure has spent more than 25 years developing this operational framework. Its online platform connects market participants through a shared placement process, keeping information, negotiations, approvals and transaction records linked throughout the lifecycle of a risk. This reduces administrative friction while improving visibility and control over ceded reinsurance business.

As participation grows, so does the platform’s value, creating what eReinsure calls the “power of the network.” Working across carriers, brokers and reinsurers has given the company insight into both their shared requirements and distinct operating needs. That understanding informs how the platform captures information, connects systems and supports each participant throughout the placement process.

This established operating environment now provides the foundation for introducing AI agents without separating them from the transactions, controls and human decisions they are intended to support.

“We have built eReinsure as an orchestration platform that gives our customers the foundation to introduce AI agents across their facultative reinsurance processes,” says Igor Best-Devereux, CEO.

Compounding Value Across the Network

eReinsure emerged during the rapid growth of the internet, when many B2B ventures were attempting to disrupt established industries through online marketplaces. Drawing on his insurance and reinsurance experience, Best-Devereux saw that the sector did not need a new marketplace. It already had capacity, established participants and valuable commercial relationships. What was needed was a more efficient way to conduct business across a fragmented, labor-intensive process.

We have built eReinsure as an orchestration platform that gives our customers the foundation to introduce AI agents across their facultative reinsurance processes.

Without replacing brokers or disrupting existing relationships, eReinsure developed tools that helped market participants work together more efficiently. Reducing the administrative effort involved in placements gave professionals more time to apply their expertise, negotiate terms and strengthen relationships.

Initially funded with modest resources, it attracted early support from Chubb. A senior executive at the global insurer recognized the potential of internet technology to connect participants across the reinsurance market. Chubb’s strategic investment in 2000 enabled eReinsure to develop its first production platform and expand as the industry embraced digital processes.

eReinsure first addressed requirements shared by cedants, brokers and reinsurers, then extended the platform through integrations and client-specific workflows. Each additional connection broadened the range of transactions the platform could support and strengthened its usefulness to the wider market.

“We are big believers in what we refer to as the power of the network, the exponential value growth that occurs as the number of participants increases,” says Best-Devereux.

Operating across this expanding network has also shown eReinsure how information develops and moves between organizations. That knowledge is increasingly important as the industry considers AI applications that depend on accurate, accessible transaction records.

Creating Reliable Transaction Data

Capturing data in facultative reinsurance, however, requires flexibility because complete information is not always available at the start of a placement.

Risk information reaches carriers and brokers in different formats and develops as terms are negotiated. Requiring a complete, standardized dataset at the outset could delay a valid placement or prevent it from progressing.

Instead of waiting for the market to become completely digital, eReinsure designed its workflow around these practical limitations. The platform captures the essential information needed to initiate a placement and then allows the record to evolve alongside the transaction. This flexibility enables businesses to move forward even when information is incomplete.

As the placement advances, missing or inconsistent details become visible, helping customers identify weaknesses in earlier data-collection processes. They can then progressively increase structured capture and validation, improving information quality without imposing requirements that restrict negotiation. The result is a progressively strengthened data record that reflects how facultative transactions actually develop.

Once completed, the record contributes to a consolidated view of ceded reinsurance activity. Dashboards help customers monitor their portfolios and manage what Best-Devereux describes as the “reinsurance asset.” Standards from bodies such as ACORD provide common ways to represent insurance information while eReinsure supplies the operational process through which it is gathered, validated and retained. The resulting data supports reporting, governance and future automation.

Maintaining its value throughout the placement lifecycle also depends on accurately transferring information between the various technologies used by market participants.

Connecting Existing Systems

Without effective system connections, employees may enter the same information repeatedly as a placement progresses, creating additional work, duplication and conflicting records.

eReinsure can connect its platform to customer environments via APIs and structured messaging, enabling placement information to flow electronically without being recreated at each stage. It can also connect to automated reinsurance capacity offered by major reinsurers, giving carriers a single outward interface to reach different markets.

Participants do not have to adopt identical technology or abandon infrastructure central to their operations. They can retain their systems and commercial relationships while participating in a coordinated process. The platform also provides effective means to manage facultative placements conducted under delegated authority. Fewer manual handoffs and reconciliations reduce the total cost of distribution.

With transaction activity consolidated across these connections, carriers can see more clearly where risk has been transferred and how exposure is accumulating across counterparties. That visibility becomes valuable when translated into enforceable controls.

Turning Visibility Into Control

Even when a carrier works with several trusted reinsurers, a large share of its portfolio may remain concentrated among only a few. To identify and control this concentration, eReinsure enables customers to manage what the industry calls a “security list.” Carriers can use it to define approved markets and monitor their cumulative credit exposure to each reinsurer.

Managing exposure also requires control over how each placement is completed. eReinsure guides the transaction through the necessary reviews and approvals, recording every action in an audit trail. This gives the carrier clear proof of the coverage it purchased and the terms accepted by the reinsurer. That proof becomes essential if a major loss occurs and the carrier needs to recover an amount far greater than the premium it paid.

The importance of that record was reinforced when the head of reinsurance at one of the world’s largest carriers told Best-Devereux that facultative coverage was valuable only if the organization could readily access the certificate documenting it. The certificate had to reflect the agreed terms, confirm that the expected review had occurred and provide enforceable evidence of coverage.

  • We are big believers in what we refer to as the power of the network, the exponential value growth that occurs as the number of participants increases.

That evidence was difficult to preserve when documentation remained within individual business units. Paper certificates could effectively sit in a “shoebox under a desk.” An underwriter might leave, or the organization could be restructured before a claim arose, making the certificate difficult to locate or verify years later.

By retaining the certificate alongside the transaction history and supporting documentation, the digital workflow preserves an accessible record of what was reviewed, agreed and purchased.

Serving users across approximately 80 countries also requires strong information governance. eReinsure accounts for varied security, privacy and regulatory obligations, including Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation. Certifications and updated security practices help protect sensitive transaction data.

These controls allow developing AI applications to operate within a governed process rather than as disconnected tools.

Making AI Operationally Viable

Within this environment, AI agents can assist users at different stages of the facultative process. Customers can develop agents that exchange information with eReinsure while operating within their own data and governance environments, or work with eReinsure to identify appropriate applications.

The platform connects these agents to the existing workflow, defining the tasks they perform and when human input is required. This allows AI to support the process while specialists retain responsibility for negotiation, judgment and market relationships.

With this balance guiding implementation, eReinsure expects the industry to introduce AI agents at an accelerated but rational pace over the next 24 months. To move beyond isolated prototypes, organizations need to prioritize use cases that deliver measurable value and plan how each agent will be designed, integrated, governed and maintained in production.

This readiness to move AI into production reflects the value of the foundation eReinsure has built over 25 years and underpins its recognition as Insurance CIO Outlook’s Top Reinsurance Management Platform 2026. Introducing AI through an established industry network, the company gives customers a practical way to modernize facultative reinsurance while preserving the expertise and relationships on which it depends.
