While much attention has focused on what this chip means for fields like artificial intelligence and cryptography, one less glamorous but equally transformative sector insurance stands to benefit immensely.
Willow isn’t just another incremental improvement in computing. Quantum computers like Willow are operating on an entirely different playing field. Compared to traditional systems, which slog through calculations one step at a time, quantum systems can process vast amounts of data simultaneously. To put this into perspective, computations that would take classical systems an astounding 10 septillion years (10 to 25 years) could be done in under five minutes using Willow. And it’s not just faster; quantum computing has the capacity to tackle problems that traditional computers fundamentally can’t solve.

Why Insurance Needs Quantum
Insurance is a business of probabilities and risk, both growing more complex every year. Traditional systems can’t keep up with the thousands of variables and layers involved, let alone do it quickly. Willow could. Suddenly, risk modeling becomes richer, faster and more accurate. Insurers could offer more personalized pricing or entirely new policy types that weren’t feasible before.
And then there’s climate risk, the perennial headache of the industry. Wildfires, floods and hurricanes, all increasingly unpredictable. Classical computing models rely on past patterns, but those aren’t as reliable in today’s climate-changed world. Quantum computers could create hyper-detailed simulations of future scenarios, helping insurers predict disasters better and, critically, design policies that are both comprehensive and profitable.
Fraud detection is another area quantum could reshape. With quantum systems, identifying suspicious claims could happen in seconds or minutes, a game-changer for saving insurers billions while speeding up payouts to honest customers. Faster fraud detection means not only significant cost savings but also improved customer experience.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the potential of quantum computing is immense and the recent breakthrough from Google brought us a step closer, several challenges remain.
While Willow’s 105 qubits represent a significant milestone, the quantum landscape still has a long way to go before tackling larger, complex industry challenges or breaking encryption tasks that would likely require 2,000 or more qubits, far beyond current technological capabilities. Error correction remains a critical focus for researchers as they work toward improving the reliability and precision of quantum systems. Another major hurdle is scalability. Building quantum systems that can handle real-world problems demands breakthroughs in both hardware and software, particularly in maintaining coherence and reducing errors during computations.
Early experiments with quantum computing in insurance are already underway. Munich Re is exploring quantum risk models with Germany’s Quantum Technology Consortium, while AXA is using quantum algorithms to speed up contract valuations. Startups like finQbit are optimizing classical processes with quantum-inspired tools and Aioi R&D Lab - Oxford is applying quantum thinking to disaster response and traffic management. The potential is also highly complementary to current AI solutions. For example, AI-powered insurance tools like AppliedAI’s document processing service, could see dramatic improvements when quantum computing matures. Their current AI systems, which were recently highlighted in Forbes for their innovative Opus platform’s ability to process thousands of pages of administrative documents daily, could process exponentially more data and identify complex patterns that are currently beyond reach. This convergence of quantum computing and AI promises to revolutionize how insurance companies handle everything from risk assessment to customer service.
Quantum technology may still be in its infancy, but the message is clear: the shift is coming.
