How the Longevity Sector is Transforming Healthcare and Insurance

Sam Evans

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) mean we are entering a transformational period in human history. This transformation is driven by an exponential increase in the volume of data and computational power, combined with a dramatic reduction in processing costs. AI is accelerating technological advancement faster than previous cycles, fuelled by compounding improvements in the above drivers, to deliver outcomes faster, better and cheaper.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the field of healthcare, where we are experiencing a seismic shift in our ability to detect, manage and treat disease.

Traditional healthcare systems are struggling. They are in effect sick care systems, waiting for patients to develop symptoms before kicking into action. As a result, they are reactive, inefficient and incredibly expensive.

There is, however, a better approach. One that is focused on prevention and prediction, leveraging the quantum leap we are seeing in AI and epigenetics to proactively tackle disease and augment human clinicians. This is why longevity holds so much promise and why it is such an exciting and dynamic part of our future.

Examples of where AI is having a profound impact in healthcare include AI-powered diagnostics. For instance, coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) scans where AI is used to analyse images to predict the likelihood of future cardiovascular events based on plaque characteristics. Precision medicine to personalise treatment and AI-assisted robotic surgery are further advancements shaping healthcare.

“There is an opportunity to offer the next generation of wellness-focused insurance products through the integration of longevity to extend healthspans and reduce mortality”

The technology allows us to prevent people dying early and also extend the period in which they can live healthy lives, i.e., prolonging the healthspan.

We are now able to offer early stage disease detection, personalised AI healthcare assistants and proactive management and reversal of chronic conditions. These can be combined with cutting-edge health optimisation protocols like therapeutic plasma exchange, regenerative therapy using exosomes and stem cell treatments.

At Eos, we focus on the intersection of AI and healthcare, whilst looking for opportunities to leverage and embed new technologies in the insurance value chain, which is a critical enabler of the broader healthcare system. Insurance allows for wide scale adoption and democratisation of new technology, with the potential to reduce the 17 years it takes on average for a new medical breakthrough to reach the front lines of healthcare.

There is an opportunity to offer the next generation of wellness-focused insurance products through the integration of longevity to extend healthspans and reduce mortality rates at significantly lower costs.

The human body is exceptionally good at hiding diseases. But now we are able to add healthy decades to people’s lives by leveraging the recent progress in advanced diagnostics, personalized health plans and cutting-edge therapeutics. In the words of Fountain Life, one of our portfolio companies, with the options now available to us, “Don’t die of something stupid”.
